Breakfast Program

The Breakfast Program operates with assistance from adult & student volunteers to provide breakfast for those students, who, for whatever reason, could not eat at home.

The program's success is based upon Parent volunteers who are willing to give an hour of their morning time to feed the children of the Riverside community.
Any parent interesting in volunteer one hour a week to support this very worthy program may call Mr. Blakeney at 758 - 4672. Volunteers are currently needed to start a five morning program. Without more interest, the program will begin a three mornings a week schedule.

The program is open to all students. (start date TBA)

The Hackmatack books are now available in the library for book club members to borrow.

Book discussions are conducted online with regularly scheduled group activities in the library.

Student Leadership Teams Student leadership teams were developed in 2001 after reflecting on the role of student council within a middle school environment. The historical structure
of student council meant that a few students were involved in the democratic processes that affected student life. In the past, council executives were
often comprised of the most popular kids who had little interest in grasping the meaning of this process. Changing Riverside's focus to a voluntary student
participation model for students whom are willing to make a committment to positive change that reflects student diversity and student interest has been
successful. The popularity contest has been eliminated and participating students now accurately represent student needs and concerns at Riverside.

Once trained, students are placed on seven leadership teams and they begin meeting with staff facilitators to plan activities and events here at Riverside. The teams for the 2005 - 2006 school year include - Student
Ambassadors, Environment, Diversity, Physically Active, Spirit, Technology and Yearbook. Students and staff facilitators dedicate a large amount of time and effort to student leadership. Stakeholders in the model meet monthly to review the program to celebrate successes and generate ideas for improvement. Overall, it is agreed by the community, this leadership model is successful at developing
a more student centred environment at Riverside
